Communication
Regular, effective communication is the key to success for any student council. This doesn’t happen by itself and it is a good idea to develop ways of keeping the school community informed of and involved in the various activities planned by the student council. Some examples include:
• Providing updates to the Principal, House mentors and staff on the student council’s activities and plans.
• Keeping a student notice- board in the school where information on the council’s activities is posted.
• Announcing upcoming events.
• Providing an end of year report to the House mentors.
Good communication doesn’t simply mean keeping everyone informed of planned activities; it also involves seeking their views and suggestions.
The student council represents all students in the school. It is very important that students receive regular information on the plans and activities of the student council and that as many students as possible participate in events organized by the council.
Procedures should be put in place to ensure that all students are fully informed about council activities. One way of ensuring this would be to provide for regular meetings between individual members of the student council. The council could also carry out a survey of student views on particular issues, or on the role of the council itself.
Regular communication between the student council and the house mentors provides the basis for building a good and lasting relationship, based on trust and respect. Having a house mentor attend meetings of the student council on a regular basis also helps to improve communications.
BE PREPARED!
Ready any information sent out before the meeting, such as the agenda or the minutes of the last meeting. Prepare any points you want to focus on.
LISTEN!
Listen carefully to what others have to say, and be open to other people’s opinions. One of the purpose of meetings is to exchange ideas, information and to learn from each other.
PARTICIPATE!
It is much more constructive to share your ideas and or raise matters of concerns to you at the meeting, rather than afterwards.
ACT!
If you undertake to follow up on a task, then do so, and be ready to report back at the next meeting.
• Minutes of meetings should be noted down and emailed to all members and house mentors for review within one week of the meeting.
• Copies must be preserved and handed over to the house mentors at the end of the student council tenure.

The following is a sample format when creating minutes of meeting.

Dissolution of Student Council
Normally a student council shall stand dissolved when the term of the members expires. The school authority may dissolve the student council before the expiry of its term in accordance with the rules and procedures governing dissolution. This will only happen in exceptional circumstances after consultation with all concerned. Where the authority intends dissolving the council, it will give the council adequate notice of the proposal, and the reasons therefore. The council will be allowed to appeal the dissolution to the principal of the school.
When the student council is dissolved another council may be formed following the procedures outlines earlier.
• Where a significant number of members of the council have been involved in a serious breach of the school’s code of behavior.
• Where serious irregularities have occurred in the functioning of the council.
• Where the activities of the council have endangered the welfare of students and staff of the school.
Sometimes it may be more appropriate to remove an individual member (or members) of the council rather than dissolve the council as a whole. This may happen in the following way:
The facilitator may propose to remove any member of the council for a continuing failure to attend meetings of the council, or for a lack of commitment to the purpose of the council, or for stated misconduct (including significant breaches of the school’s code of behavior). Such a decision would be solely made by the school authority only after consulting the student council member.

Projects: Plan, Implement and Evaluate
Student councils can positively impact a school when their projects reach out to include everyone and appeal to even the most diverse student.
To have this positive effect, projects and activities should be energetic, exciting and meaningful. In their efforts to represent all students, councils provide a variety of opportunities for students to express themselves. The majority of student councils manage their own projects, but they can also coordinate or assist with projects of other school clubs or organizations.
By planning projects, students develop leadership skills in decision-making and working toward a common goal, expand social relationship with others, explore areas of personal and educational interest, and become part of the school or community. Ideally, projects offer these benefits to organizers and participants. In essence, each project is an indication of how well the council measures the interests or needs of the entire student body.
An organization’s success or failure often depends on the outcome of its projects. Much planning, work and efforts must go into each project.
Projects should do the following:
• Extend the goal and purposes of the council. Projects should not be undertaken simply to prove that the council is busy or because “that’s the way it’s always been.”
• Provide educational or social value and be within the ability and comprehension of council members.
• Be planned according to the interests of a large number of the members and involve a large number of participants.
• Encourage initiative, creativity, responsibility and cooperation.
• Be evaluated upon completion.
To engage student interests and avoid scheduling problems, councils should plan their projects systematically. Here is an outline of a process that the committees can follow:
• List the general areas upon which the council wishes to focus. These might include community services, student welfare, school service, career development, social functions and school spirit.
• Conduct brainstorming sessions on each area and propose several activities.
• Review the evaluations of the previous year’s projects.
• Compare this year’s proposed list with last year’s list and make adjustments.
• Weigh any suggestions for program expansion or cutbacks in specific areas, making sure that all the members are actively involved.
• Prepare a draft calendar of the activities for the year to make sure the council does not take on too many projects at a time.
• Submit recommendations about project expansion or cuts to the appropriate committees via house mentors.
Planning any activity requires careful though and preparation, before stepping into action, be sure that you can answer the following questions:
• WHAT are you planning to do?
• WHY do you want to do this project?
• WHEN and WHERE will the activity take place?
• WHO will benefit from the project?
• WHICH facilitator/s will need to approve the projects?
• WHEN will the basic planning be done?
• WHAT committees are necessary?
• WHAT kind of publicity is needed?
• WAS the project worthwhile?
• WHAT’S next? WHERE do we go from here?
The types of student council projects are only limited by imagination, energy and available resources. Many projects come from the needs within the school or community and others from school traditions. The following section described typical project areas often undertaken by student councils, followed by a title listing of various projects. These titles are offered to give an idea of the types of projects that the council can develop on its own.
